Marine and Aquatic Welfare

Animal Welfare in Aquarium Fish Trade

The marine ornamental fish trade sources millions of wild fish annually for home aquaria, with significant welfare losses during capture, transport, and captive keeping.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The ornamental fish trade represents a massive, largely hidden welfare problem. The combination of collection stress, cyanide poisoning, transport mortality, and high failure rates in home aquaria means that for every fish displayed in a home aquarium, several more have died in the supply chain. Wild collection from coral reefs causes welfare harm to individual fish and damages the reef ecosystem that supports fish welfare at population level. Consumer awareness of these issues is low, and the appeal of colourful reef fish drives demand without understanding the welfare cost. Captive-bred fish, freshwater species, or completely non-animal aquaria are the welfare-appropriate alternatives.
