Farm Animal Welfare

Farmed Crocodile and Alligator Welfare

Crocodilians are farmed primarily for luxury leather goods, with welfare conditions in intensive farms typically involving small enclosures, high stocking densities, and inadequate environmental conditions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed crocodile welfare represents a case where an animal's natural requirements are almost entirely unmet in commercial production. Crocodilians are thermoregulating ectotherms that require varied temperature environments, space for territorial and social behaviour, and access to water for hunting and thermoregulation. Intensive concrete enclosures at high stocking density provide none of these. The product - luxury leather for handbags and accessories - does not represent a compelling welfare justification for the level of suffering involved in intensive crocodilian farming. As with exotic leather generally, plant-based and synthetic alternatives exist for luxury goods. Consumer and brand pressure is creating some improvement but at slow pace.
