Dog Welfare in Puppy Farming

Puppy farming - large-scale commercial breeding of dogs in poor welfare conditions - is a major source of welfare suffering and produces dogs with health and behavioural problems that affect their entire lives.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Puppy farming causes welfare suffering at every stage: breeding bitches kept in poor conditions with no socialisation or individual care, puppies deprived of normal developmental experiences and early disease exposure, and buyers who unwittingly purchase dogs with lifetime health and behavioural consequences. Lucy's Law has driven puppy farming further underground and online, requiring continued enforcement and public education. The most powerful individual intervention is to adopt from rescue or buy only from the breeder in person - never from a pet shop, third party, or online seller who cannot show you the mother and home environment. This simple rule would eliminate most puppy farm purchasing if consistently followed.
