Dog Puppy Socialisation and Long-Term Welfare

The puppy socialisation window from 3 to 14 weeks represents the most critical period for long-term behavioural welfare, with inadequate socialisation associated with lifelong anxiety and fear.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Puppy socialisation is the single most important welfare investment in a dog's lifetime. The experiences a puppy has between 3 and 14 weeks of age - or fails to have - shape their response to novel stimuli for the rest of their life. Dogs from puppy farms that spend this critical window in isolation, hearing only kennel noise, frequently develop generalised anxiety that is difficult or impossible to fully resolve. The welfare cost manifests over the entire lifetime of the dog and often determines whether the dog remains in the home. Prioritising socialisation during the sensitive period prevents a lifetime of anxiety and fear.
