Noise phobia in dogs, particularly fear of thunderstorms and fireworks, causes significant suffering and affects a large proportion of pet dogs, with effective management approaches that many owners are unaware of.
Dogs experiencing noise phobia suffer acutely during fear events - elevated heart rate, cortisol, and adrenaline create a physiological stress response equivalent to genuine threat. Some dogs injure themselves attempting to escape. The experience is genuinely terrifying. Chronic noise phobia also sensitises dogs, making responses worsen over time. Effective management is available but requires proactive intervention: owners who wait until fireworks night to address the problem have left it too late for that year.
