Cattle Respiratory Disease: Welfare Implications of a Major Cattle Illness

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most common and economically significant disease of beef and dairy cattle, causing significant pain and suffering in millions of animals annually.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cattle with BRD experience fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and profound depression. The disease course can last days to weeks, during which animals are clearly suffering. Inadequate or delayed treatment prolongs suffering unnecessarily. Pain relief (NSAIDs) alongside antibiotics significantly improves welfare outcomes but is not universally used. Prevention through management - reducing transport stress, gradual mixing of cattle, vaccination, and good nutrition - is both welfare-positive and economically beneficial.
