Pig Enrichment: Meeting Rooting and Exploration Needs

Pigs are highly motivated to root and explore their environment, making enrichment provision one of the most important welfare interventions in pig farming, and now legally required in UK systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The rooting motivation in pigs is intense and persistent - when prevented from rooting, pigs redirect this behaviour toward pen structures, pen-mates, and themselves. Tail biting, the most serious welfare consequence of rooting frustration, causes pain, injury, infection, and can be fatal. Effective enrichment that provides foraging opportunities, novel materials to explore, and physical substrates to root satisfies this motivation directly. Farms providing deep straw bedding satisfy rooting needs far more effectively than the hanging chains that pass legal requirements but provide minimal stimulation.
