The One Health framework recognises that human, animal, and environmental health are inextricably linked, with implications for how animal welfare is understood and addressed within broader health systems.
One Health provides a framework that elevates animal welfare from a peripheral concern to a central component of global health security. Animals kept in poor welfare conditions are more susceptible to disease, require more antibiotic treatment, and present greater zoonotic disease risk. Improving animal welfare conditions is therefore simultaneously a direct welfare intervention and a public health measure. The One Health lens makes the case for animal welfare investment in terms that resonate with health policymakers beyond the welfare community.
