Alpaca farming has grown significantly in the UK as interest in luxury fibre has increased, but welfare standards for this South American camelid are poorly developed and the industry lacks clear guidance.
Alpaca welfare in the UK is patchy due to the novelty of the industry, variable keeper experience, and inadequate regulatory oversight. Lone alpacas suffer acutely - their social needs are intense and isolation causes visible distress. Inexperienced keepers may not recognise dental problems, body condition decline, or parasite burdens until animals are severely compromised. Shearing is welfare-essential but stressful for the animal if performed by inexperienced handlers. The British Alpaca Society provides guidance but cannot enforce standards on non-member farms.
