Cattle Body Condition Scoring: Using Animal-Based Welfare Assessment

Body condition scoring of cattle provides an objective welfare assessment tool that reflects nutritional status, management quality, and health outcomes over time, enabling early intervention to prevent suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Body condition score reflects the welfare history of an animal over weeks to months - an emaciated cow did not become emaciated overnight. Low BCS indicates nutritional deficiency that causes weakness, immune suppression, increased disease susceptibility, and reduced ability to thermoregulate. Very low BCS cattle may be too weak to compete at feed barriers or to rise after lying. Regular BCS assessment provides an early warning system: identifying cows with declining BCS before they become emaciated allows dietary intervention before welfare is seriously compromised.
