Companion Animals

Companion Parrot Longevity and Welfare

Large parrots are extraordinarily long-lived animals requiring lifelong commitment and specialist care that many owners underestimate.

Key Facts

African grey parrots can live 60-80 years; macaws up to 100 years
Many parrots outlive their owners and require rehoming multiple times during their lifetimes
Parrots require constant mental stimulation to prevent boredom and feather destructive behaviour
Nutritional needs are complex, with many companion parrots suffering from vitamin A deficiency
Rehoming rates for large parrots are extremely high due to the mismatch of owner expectation and reality

Welfare Considerations

Large parrots often spend decades in welfare-compromising conditions because owners are unprepared for their needs. Comprehensive education before adoption and lifetime planning including provisions in wills is essential.

What You Can Do

Research parrot lifespan and care requirements thoroughly before adopting
Make provisions in your will for your parrot's lifelong care
Join parrot owner organisations for education and support
Provide species-appropriate diet, enrichment, and social contact
Consider adopting a rehomed adult parrot from a sanctuary rather than purchasing a young bird
