Donkey Hoof Care and Welfare

Donkey hoof care is a critical welfare issue, with poor hoof management causing painful lameness and chronic welfare compromise.

Key Facts

Donkey hooves grow differently from horse hooves and require specialist trimming knowledge
Overgrown or deformed hooves are extremely common in neglected working and pet donkeys
In the UK, around 10-12 weeks between trims is the recommended interval
White line disease and thrush are common painful hoof conditions in donkeys kept in wet conditions
The Donkey Sanctuary provides free hoof care guidance and training materials

Welfare Considerations

Hoof neglect is one of the most common causes of chronic lameness and suffering in donkeys. Regular specialist hoof care and dry living conditions prevent the vast majority of hoof-related welfare problems.

What You Can Do

Ensure donkeys receive skilled hoof trimming every 10-12 weeks
Find a farrier or equine podiatrist with specific donkey knowledge
Provide dry lying areas and avoid persistently wet underfoot conditions
Check donkey hooves weekly for signs of thrush, white line disease, or overgrowth
