Companion Ferret Welfare

Ferrets are highly active, social mustelids whose welfare needs are frequently misunderstood by owners.

Key Facts

Ferrets are obligate carnivores that need high-protein meat-based diets
They are intensely social and should be kept in groups of at least two
Adrenal disease, insulinoma, and lymphoma are common ferret health problems
Ferrets need several hours of supervised free-roaming exercise daily outside their enclosure
They are seasonal breeders and unspayed jills can develop aplastic anaemia if not mated

Welfare Considerations

Ferret welfare is frequently compromised by inadequate diet, housing, and social provision. Education about their specific carnivore and social needs is essential for prospective owners.

What You Can Do

Feed ferrets a raw meat or high-quality kitten food diet - never dry ferret mix
Keep ferrets in bonded pairs or groups and never alone
Provide large enclosures with tunnels, hammocks, and enrichment
Allow daily free-roaming exercise outside the enclosure
Find a vet experienced with ferrets and vaccinate against distemper and influenza
