Farmed Catfish Welfare

Channel catfish are the primary farmed fish species in the USA, with welfare concerns in intensive pond production systems.

Key Facts

The USA produces around 300,000 tonnes of channel catfish annually
Intensive pond production often involves very high stocking densities
Columnaris disease and enteric septicaemia are major welfare challenges
Catfish show stress responses to crowding and low dissolved oxygen
Harvest methods including electrofishing and seining cause significant stress

Welfare Considerations

Catfish welfare in intensive production requires improved stocking densities, disease management, and humane harvest methods. The scale of catfish production makes welfare improvements impactful for millions of fish annually.

What You Can Do

Choose catfish from certified responsible aquaculture sources
Advocate for welfare standards in US catfish aquaculture certification
Support research into catfish stress responses and welfare assessment
Engage with the large scale of US catfish production and its welfare implications
Reduce consumption from intensive catfish operations without welfare commitments
