Two-thirds of UK butterfly species have declined in the past 50 years, with habitat loss, climate change, and pesticides affecting both populations and individual insect welfare.
While insect welfare science is developing, there is increasing evidence that butterflies experience at minimum nociception. Population declines reflect the loss of vast numbers of individual lives and represent a significant component of biodiversity loss requiring urgent action.
