Veterinary education increasingly integrates welfare science as a core competency, but variation in the depth of welfare training means graduates may not be equipped to advocate effectively.
Vets are uniquely positioned to advocate for animal welfare across all sectors, but this requires adequate welfare education. Curricula that train vets to recognise, assess, and act on welfare problems - including speaking up in challenging contexts - create advocates who improve animal lives throughout their careers.
