Mice and rats are the most commonly used laboratory species, with enrichment standards that significantly affect their welfare through long experimental periods.
Mouse and rat enrichment is supported by strong evidence and yet implementation remains inconsistent across facilities. Provision of nesting material, social housing, and environmental complexity are basic welfare requirements that should be standard across all facilities. The evidence base is well-established and the barriers are primarily institutional.
