Dog Thunder Phobia and Noise Desensitisation

Fear of thunder affects up to 40% of dogs and can severely impact welfare. Evidence-based desensitisation and counter-conditioning programmes significantly reduce distress.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

During storms, dogs can experience acute physiological stress responses including elevated cortisol, heart rate and blood pressure. Severe cases attempt escape, causing injury or becoming lost. Medication during storms - whether melatonin, alprazolam or trazodone - is appropriate when behavioural management alone is insufficient. Punishment-based responses make the condition significantly worse. Owner education is essential: calm, reassuring presence is beneficial, contrary to older advice to ignore anxious dogs.
