The Wild Animal Initiative funds research into wild animal welfare, recognising that billions of wild animals experience suffering from disease, predation, and starvation that could potentially be reduced.
Wild animal welfare challenges conventional conservation thinking by asking whether we have obligations to reduce suffering in wild populations beyond just conserving species. Animals dying from disease, predation, and starvation experience real suffering regardless of whether it is natural. Research-based interventions — wildlife vaccination, contraception programs, parasite treatment — already exist and demonstrate feasibility. The scale of wild animal suffering is orders of magnitude larger than farmed animal suffering. Whether and how to intervene responsibly is one of the most important questions in applied animal welfare ethics.
