Farmed Venison and Deer Welfare

Deer farming provides an alternative to intensive livestock but presents unique welfare challenges from the species' semi-wild nature and strong flight response.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed deer occupy an unusual welfare position: they have been domesticated only recently and retain strong anti-predator behaviours that make routine management inherently stressful. Low-stress handling systems using wide curved races that prevent sight of handlers reduce flight responses. Antler velvet removal - practiced in some markets - is performed on live animals and causes pain without humane killing of the velvet supply. High-welfare deer farming minimises handling, provides extensive space, uses calm management techniques and applies rigorous pre-slaughter protocols.
