Lions in zoos face specific challenges around space, social structure and behavioural expression. Evidence-based management improves individual welfare significantly.
Zoo lion welfare requires attention to social structure, space adequacy and behavioural opportunity. Lone male lions develop stereotypic pacing and aggressive interactions with keepers. Pride-compatible groupings - carefully managed coalitions or bonded pairs - provide affiliative social behaviour absent in solitary housing. Feeding enrichment that engages stalking and manipulative behaviour is more stimulating than presenting dead carcasses in exposed locations. Large naturalistic enclosures with shade, elevated vantage points and privacy areas enable the full range of lion behavioural repertoire.
