Most wild birds have legal protection for their nests and eggs during the breeding season, but disturbance remains a significant welfare and conservation issue due to lack of public awareness.
Nest disturbance by humans - whether deliberate, through ignorance, or incidentally through garden maintenance - causes real suffering and mortality to wild birds. Eggs abandoned in cold weather die rapidly, and young chicks may starve or become hypothermic if parents are repeatedly disturbed. The breeding season, typically March to August in the UK, is when gardens, hedgerows, and woodland edges should be managed with particular care. Postponing pruning, hedge cutting, and building works until after the breeding season significantly reduces impact.
