Abalone aquaculture is growing globally, raising questions about the welfare capacity of these gastropod molluscs and appropriate farming standards.
The welfare status of abalone is scientifically uncertain. Their nervous systems are simpler than vertebrates, but they exhibit avoidance behaviour and stress responses. Given this uncertainty, a precautionary approach to abalone welfare is warranted. Key welfare concerns include stocking density, handling stress, disease management, and slaughter methods. Boiling or freezing without prior stunning may cause prolonged suffering if abalone can experience pain. More research is needed to understand their sentience and develop appropriate welfare standards.
