Horn removal is common in dairy and beef cattle to reduce injury risk but causes significant pain. Welfare-conscious approaches prioritise early disbudding with full analgesia.
Cattle dehorning and disbudding represent major welfare interventions. Without analgesia, calves show pain behaviours including ear flattening, tail raising, struggling, and elevated cortisol for hours. The trend toward polled (naturally hornless) genetics offers a long-term alternative that avoids the procedure entirely. Where dehorning is necessary, combining local anaesthetic with systemic NSAID analgesia significantly reduces suffering. Some welfare certification schemes now mandate full analgesia, and several countries require veterinary involvement. Breeding for polled genetics is the most welfare-positive long-term solution.
