Analgesic, anxiolytic, and sedative medications can reduce suffering during painful procedures and chronic pain conditions in farm, companion, and wild animals.
Pharmacological pain and anxiety management represents one of the most direct tools for reducing animal suffering. In farm animals, NSAID analgesia for routine painful procedures like castration, dehorning, and tail docking can dramatically reduce suffering when implemented. Sedatives reduce transport and handling stress. In companion animals, chronic pain conditions are frequently under-recognised and under-treated due to poor pain assessment skills and cost barriers. In wildlife rehabilitation, sedatives enable safe handling of wild animals. The welfare case for analgesic use is strong; the main barriers are cost, regulatory frameworks, and lack of pain recognition skills. Training veterinarians and producers in pain recognition and management is a key welfare intervention.
