New Zealand is the world leader in farmed deer production. Welfare challenges relate to the semi-wild nature of deer and high-stress handling events during routine management.
Farmed deer welfare is uniquely challenging because deer domestication is recent and incomplete. Even after generations of farming, deer retain strong prey-species flight responses that make routine handling intensely stressful. Appropriate handling facilities designed specifically for deer reduce injury and stress risk. Disease prevention including vaccination against respiratory pathogens significantly reduces calf mortality. The welfare of farmed deer is improving through better facility design, stockmanship training, and recognition of species-specific behavioural needs.
