Land-based recirculating systems for abalone farming allow precise environmental control. Welfare implications of intensive RAS abalone production are beginning to be studied.
RAS abalone welfare involves managing a precautionary approach to welfare under scientific uncertainty about sentience. Key welfare-relevant parameters in RAS systems include temperature (critical for metabolism and stress), water quality, shelter provision, appropriate stocking density, and feeding management. Overcrowding reduces growth rates and increases mortality, providing production-welfare alignment incentives. Handling during grading and harvest causes shell damage and physiological stress indicators in abalone regardless of their sentience status. Welfare-positive RAS design minimises unnecessary handling, provides appropriate substrate and shelter, and maintains optimal water quality throughout the production cycle.
