Interactive play is essential for cat welfare, meeting natural predatory needs and providing physical exercise and mental stimulation. Evidence-based play sessions significantly improve feline quality of life.
Cat play welfare is both simple and frequently neglected. Cats are obligate predators whose entire nervous system is attuned to hunting. Without regular opportunity to complete hunting behaviour sequences, cats experience the equivalent of chronic motivational frustration. This contributes to hyperactivity, attention-seeking, aggression, and redirected hunting at owner ankles. Interactive play with appropriate toys allows safe expression of natural predatory behaviour and provides significant physical and mental benefit. Play also strengthens the human-cat bond when conducted respectfully. Wand toys that allow cats to stalk, pounce, and 'catch' prey are most effective. Allowing cats to 'win' catches and consume a meal after play completes the natural sequence.
