Marine Pollution Microplastics Wildlife

Marine animal welfare encompasses the physical and psychological wellbeing of fish, mammals, and invertebrates in ocean ecosystems.

Key Facts

Marine animals show complex behaviours and stress responses
Fishing methods vary enormously in their welfare impacts
Ocean warming and acidification affect marine animal physiology and welfare
Marine protected areas benefit both ecosystem health and animal welfare
Consumer choices for certified sustainable seafood can reduce marine animal suffering

Welfare Considerations

Marine animals are among the least protected by welfare legislation despite many species showing compelling evidence of sentience and complex experience. Improving marine animal welfare requires both direct interventions such as humane fishing methods and broader ocean conservation to maintain healthy ecosystems.
