Elephant welfare in zoos has improved through larger enclosures, social groups, and reduced performance requirements, but challenges remain.
Elephants are highly intelligent, wide-ranging, and socially complex animals whose welfare needs are extremely difficult to meet in traditional zoo enclosures. The most progressive zoos invest heavily in large, multi-acre naturalistic spaces with complex social groups, while sanctuaries offer an alternative for elephants whose welfare cannot be adequately supported in zoological settings.
