Outdoor access and rooting materials for pigs provide significant welfare benefits by enabling natural behaviours.
Pigs denied outdoor access and rooting materials experience chronic frustration of fundamental behavioural motivations, predisposing them to tail biting, aggression, and abnormal behaviours. Outdoor access and adequate enrichment materials - particularly straw or other rootable substrates - address these needs at relatively low cost and represent a high-welfare-impact intervention.
