Dehorning causes significant pain in cattle; advances in analgesia, polled genetics, and disbudding timing reduce suffering.
Dehorning and disbudding cause acute pain and, without analgesia, ongoing post-procedural discomfort lasting 12-24 hours. Despite legislative requirements for pain relief in older calves, compliance with analgesic use for disbudding young calves remains inconsistent. Breeding polled cattle eliminates the welfare cost of dehorning entirely and represents the long-term welfare-positive solution.
