Disturbance of seal haul-out sites causes welfare impacts particularly for pups; coastal management and visitor guidance reduce these effects.
Haul-out disturbance causes acute stress responses and, in the case of breeding seals, can result in pup abandonment with fatal consequences. Seals forced repeatedly into the water by approaching humans or dogs expend energy reserves that are critical for thermoregulation and breeding success. Simple behavioural changes by beach users - maintaining distance, controlling dogs, and following guidance - can protect seal welfare at critical sites.
