Farmed Goat Dairy Welfare

Dairy goats have specific welfare needs including social housing, browsing opportunities, and management of kids at birth.

Key Facts

Goats are highly social and suffer in isolation
Kid removal at birth causes distress in both mother and offspring
Goats are browsers preferring varied vegetation over uniform grass
Foot problems including foot rot are common in housed dairy goats
Dehorning and disbudding welfare issues parallel those in cattle

Welfare Considerations

Dairy goat welfare shares many challenges with dairy cattle including kid separation distress, but also has species-specific needs around social complexity, environmental enrichment through browsing opportunities, and foot health management. Welfare-positive goat dairy systems provide social housing, browsing enrichment, and manage kid separation thoughtfully.
