Ferrets are intelligent, social mustelids with complex needs often underestimated by owners; appropriate housing and social contact are essential.
Ferret welfare is frequently compromised by housing in inadequate cages with insufficient social contact and exercise opportunity. As highly intelligent, active predators, ferrets require extensive enrichment, social companionship, and regular interaction to maintain psychological wellbeing. Owners who underestimate these needs inadvertently create chronic suffering through boredom and social isolation.
