Nose ringing of pigs is used to deter rooting in outdoor systems, but causes pain and prevents natural foraging behaviour, raising welfare concerns.
Nose ringing prevents pigs from expressing one of their strongest natural behaviours. While rooting causes genuine land management challenges in outdoor systems, the welfare cost of permanent nose ringing is significant. The chronic frustration of prevented rooting motivation, combined with the pain of ring insertion and ongoing discomfort, represents a substantial welfare compromise. Certification schemes that prohibit ringing while requiring appropriate outdoor access represent the right direction for outdoor pig welfare.
