Rainbow and brown trout are the most commonly farmed salmonid after Atlantic salmon, and face welfare challenges from high stocking densities, disease and poor water quality.
Farmed trout welfare deserves the same attention as salmon welfare but has historically received less research and regulatory focus. Trout in overcrowded conditions show elevated stress hormones, increased fin damage and vulnerability to infectious disease. Water quality problems cause acute discomfort and physiological stress. The welfare science for trout is developing rapidly and should inform the regulatory and certification standards that govern this large global industry.
