The recent availability of effective antiviral treatments for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) represents one of the most significant advances in companion animal welfare in decades.
The development of effective FIP treatment is an extraordinary welfare advance. Before 2019, a diagnosis of FIP was effectively a death sentence causing profound suffering in young cats through effusion, organ failure and neurological dysfunction. Antiviral treatment allows the large majority of cats to recover fully and live normal lives. The welfare benefit - measured in years of good-quality life for thousands of cats annually - is enormous. Access to affordable treatment globally remains a welfare equity challenge.
