Keeping backyard chickens has grown in popularity, but comes with welfare responsibilities that many inexperienced keepers are unprepared for.
Backyard chicken welfare problems are frequently invisible to inexperienced keepers who lack the knowledge to recognise disease, parasitism or nutritional deficiency. Red mite infestations cause intense pruritus and anaemia that can kill birds, yet many keepers do not recognise the signs. Marek's disease causes neurological dysfunction and paralysis in unvaccinated birds. The welfare responsibilities of chicken keeping extend throughout each bird's life and cannot be discharged when egg production declines.
