The mental health and wellbeing of livestock farmers is strongly linked to the welfare of their animals, with farmer stress and burnout leading to welfare failures.
The welfare of farmers and the welfare of their animals are inseparable. A farmer experiencing burnout, depression or crisis is less able to provide appropriate animal care, observe health problems early, or invest in welfare improvements. Conversely, chronic animal welfare problems - unresolvable lameness, mastitis or mortality events - cause significant psychological suffering for farmers who care about their animals. Supporting farmer mental health and financial viability is therefore a genuine animal welfare intervention.
