Welfare Implications of Sheep Shearing Practice

Shearing is a necessary welfare procedure for wooled sheep breeds, but shearing technique, handling, timing and shearer skill profoundly affect whether it is a welfare-positive or welfare-negative event.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Shearing is unavoidably stressful for sheep - the restraint, novel postures and handling involved trigger stress responses regardless of technique. However, the difference between competent and poor shearing is substantial: a skilled shearer causes minimal physical injury, uses calm efficient handling and completes the procedure quickly, minimising duration of stress. Poorly handled shearing - with shouting, rough positioning, skin lacerations and excessive duration - causes both acute suffering and conditioned fear of the shearing environment. Investment in shearer training and fair pay for skilled shearers is a direct animal welfare investment.
