All UK bat species are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Bat populations have declined severely due to habitat loss, roost disturbance and pesticide reduction of insect prey, but conservation efforts are showing results.
Individual bat welfare is closely linked to roost quality and insect availability. Bats that cannot access reliable roosts face thermal stress during torpor and reproductive failure as mothers cannot maintain their single pup's temperature. Roost disturbance during maternity season (late spring to early autumn) causes pup abandonment and mortality. At the population level, insect decline - driven by pesticide use, light pollution and habitat loss - means bats must travel further and expend more energy for declining prey. Bat rehabilitation for injured or displaced individuals requires specialist skills and a licensed bat carer network.
