Microchipping is mandatory for dogs in the UK and increasingly adopted for cats. Beyond reuniting lost animals with owners, microchipping has significant welfare benefits that are often underappreciated.
The welfare value of microchipping extends well beyond the identification function. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pets are separated from their owners by accident, theft or disaster. Unidentified animals face kennel stress, inadequate medical history communication and - in overwhelmed shelter systems - euthanasia. Microchipped animals with current contact details are rapidly reunited, avoiding all these welfare costs. The investment in microchipping and database registration maintenance (updating address and phone number when they change) is minimal compared to the welfare benefit it delivers across the lifetime of a pet.
