Most companion parrots in captivity are fed inappropriate seed-based diets that cause serious preventable disease. Converting parrots to nutritionally complete diets is a major welfare challenge with lifelong health implications.
Nutritional welfare is foundational to parrot health and wellbeing. A parrot on an all-seed diet may appear healthy for years while silently developing hepatic disease, reproductive pathology and immune dysfunction. The welfare cost is borne not in acute suffering but in compressed lifespan and chronic subclinical disease. Converting parrots from seed to pelleted diets requires patience, consistency and species-specific knowledge - it is one of the most impactful welfare improvements an owner can make. Species differences are critical: a diet appropriate for an African Grey is not necessarily appropriate for a Cockatiel or Amazon.
