Hen Welfare in Backyard Flocks: Health, Housing and Flock Management

Backyard poultry keeping has increased substantially. While often motivated by welfare concerns, backyard hens face specific health challenges that require knowledge, preparation and ongoing veterinary access.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Backyard hen keeping is well-intentioned but welfare outcomes vary enormously based on keeper knowledge and commitment. Hens require species-specific care including dust bathing space, perches at appropriate height, adequate indoor space, protection from predators, and regular health monitoring. Ex-commercial hens - often adopted as an act of welfare rescue - have specific health vulnerabilities from years of intensive laying, including reproductive tumours, egg peritonitis and osteoporosis. Keepers who are unprepared for these challenges may find themselves with sick hens and no affordable veterinary access. Preparation and ongoing education are the foundations of ethical backyard hen keeping.
