Pig Pain Assessment and Management: Clinical Best Practice

Pigs experience acute and chronic pain from production procedures, disease and injury. Recognising pig pain and managing it appropriately with analgesia is a fundamental welfare obligation in modern pig farming.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pain management in pigs lags significantly behind that in companion animals and humans. Procedures that would be unthinkable without anaesthesia in a dog are routinely performed without pain relief in piglets. This reflects both economic pressures (analgesics add cost) and a historical underestimation of pig sentience and pain capacity. The scientific evidence is now unambiguous: pigs experience pain in ways that are neurologically and behaviourally analogous to human pain. Veterinary, legislative and industry culture change is necessary to make pain management the default rather than the exception in commercial pig farming.
