Hoof health is fundamental to horse welfare. Appropriate farriery or barefoot management, regular care cycles and early intervention for hoof problems prevent the lameness that is the leading welfare problem in working horses.
Hoof care is the foundation of equine welfare because inadequate hoof management leads to lameness, and lameness causes significant chronic pain. Horses with overgrown hooves develop incorrect biomechanics that create secondary musculoskeletal problems throughout the body. Laminitis - triggered by diet, metabolic disease or excessive loading - causes acute severe pain followed by chronic structural changes that require lifelong management. Early recognition and veterinary involvement prevents the chronic welfare consequences of delayed treatment. Both shod and barefoot management can support excellent hoof welfare when applied appropriately for the individual horse's workload, environment and conformation.
