Bears are wide-ranging, highly intelligent omnivores whose welfare in captivity depends critically on space, cognitive enrichment and seasonal management that respects their natural biological rhythms.
Bear welfare in captivity is heavily influenced by the enormous gap between wild-range ecology and captive space. Bears that pace concrete enclosures are expressing frustration at confinement - stereotypic pacing is one of the most reliable behavioural indicators of inadequate welfare. Modern bear facilities that provide large naturalistic enclosures with substantial substrate variety, foraging opportunities, water features and cognitive enrichment can support better welfare, but only if space is genuinely adequate. Polar bears in particular have been the subject of welfare concern sufficient to prompt some zoos to retire their polar bear exhibits entirely rather than maintain animals in welfare-compromised conditions.
