Cat Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease: Stress Management

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), particularly feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), is strongly linked to environmental stress. Welfare-focused management addresses both symptoms and their stress-related causes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

FIC is a welfare problem with a welfare solution. The disease cycle - stress triggers inflammation which causes pain which increases stress - requires intervention at multiple points. Medical treatment of acute episodes relieves immediate pain but does not address the underlying stress vulnerability. Environmental modification that reduces stress triggers (inter-cat tension, resource competition, insufficient hiding places, major household changes) prevents recurrence. Cats with recurrent FIC are telling owners something important about their environment - the welfare-appropriate response is to listen and modify the environment, not to repeatedly treat episodes without addressing cause.
