Crocodilians in zoos include caimans, alligators and true crocodiles. Their welfare requires precise thermal management, appropriate water provision, suitable feeding protocols and respect for their semi-solitary nature.
Crocodilian welfare is frequently underestimated because their inactive appearance is misinterpreted as contentment rather than assessed against their actual behavioural needs. A crocodilian that cannot thermoregulate correctly - moving between water and basking areas to maintain precise body temperature - experiences metabolic dysfunction, immune compromise and reduced digestive efficiency. Thermal management is therefore not a luxury but a welfare necessity. The cognitive complexity of crocodilians - increasingly documented through research - means that barren environments with no feeding enrichment or environmental variation create welfare deficits that their inactive nature masks but does not eliminate.
